I'm honored to receive the endorsements of 19-year-resident Brenda Portelli and long-serving Councilman Chris McIntyre (Ward 5). If you missed them in the paper, you can read them here.
If you missed Tuesday's debate, watch for re-runs on Channel 77.
"Democratic challengers Kristin Muir and John Bartlett, both attorneys, are critical of rising taxes in the township. They propose a strong effort to lure businesses and redevelop vacant properties, and want to look for cost-saving measures in the budget." Read the whole article.
On October 30, Wayne Today will publish a 325-word statement from each candidate in this year's local race, including John Bartlett and township-wide candidates Victor Hayek (mayor) and Kristin Muir (council at-large). Click here to read John's statement.
John Bartlett is running a campaign for a "walkable, workable" Wayne. Democrats have increased county party registrations by more than 54 percent and hope voters will use November to make a statement. |
In a front-page article in Sunday's (July 27) Herald News, political beat reporter Paul Brubaker wrote:
John Bartlett is Ivy League-educated, has a background in political fundraising and a platform focused on local issues in his bid to win a Wayne Council seat. As a Democrat in a Republican town, he has a handicap getting elected to a local government where the GOP holds eight of the nine council seats. But a surge in Passaic County's voter registrations and in unaffiliated voters joining parties since the presidential primary in February makes him bullish about his chances of winning...
The registration trend has trickled down to Bartlett's battle in Wayne's 2nd Ward. Even though the GOP still holds the majority of voters in the township by a margin of about 2,500, there are 48 percent more Democrats and 12 percent more Republicans than there were on February's primary day.
"We can win these seats this year. And once we win them and show how well we can govern, we can hold them," Bartlett said.

WAYNE – Sheriff Jerry Speziale has endorsed mayoral candidate Victor Hayek and council candidate John Bartlett. Speziale made the endorsement, and presented a $2,000 check to the Hayek/Bartlett campaign, at a Memorial Day barbecue held at the Hayek home on Southhall Court.
“Vic and I have been in law enforcement together, and John I’ve known for quite some time. They’re both family men, and they both care about Wayne. I’m certainly going to support them wholeheartedly, and we’re going to make sure that we have a new mayor and a new councilman” in November, Speziale said.
Hayek served for more than six years as a Wayne Police Officer, until an injury in the line of duty forced him to an early retirement. As president of the Wayne School Board in 2007-2008, he oversaw the restructuring of the business office, uncovered and corrected past accounting irregularities, and presented a school budget that came in below the state cap to save Wayne taxpayers $7.7 million over the next 20 years.
Bartlett is an attorney at Lowenstein Sandler PC in Roseland, where he represents busineses, schools and non-profit organizations. A former journalist, Bartlett also has a law enforcement connection: He spent two years in Washington, D.C., as a national advocate for law enforcement and crime victims with the organization Fight Crime: Invest In Kids.
